Jomo Kenyatta University Of Agriculture And Technology School Of Law, Welcome to the School of Law, at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT). JKUAT has a strong track record of teaching and a great reputation for discovery, innovation and research excellence upon which the School of Law has built to establish a reputation for legal education within the niche of law related to science, technology and innovation. Our fundamental belief is that we are here to provide the resources needed for our students to succeed. Our desire is to continue to expand and develop an exceptional legal, scientific and social learning experience.

We have an a mixture of young and experienced members of staff; mixing the zeal of the current world and knowledge borne out of practice and experience, to develop a robust faculty suited to the demands of the current world. This innovative community of faculty and staff are dedicated and supportive because they see students as an investment in the future.

We have developed and deliver courses which provide knowledge and experiences that serve as a strong foundation for our students. It is in this regard that three departments have been created at the School of Law. Whereas the Public and Private law departments administer units within the classical divisions in law, the department of Law, Science and Technology is specifically creates to address research within the University niche and create a research environment that links the spheres of science, technology, and innovation to legal studies so as to create a framework upon which legal education will harness scientific research towards development.

LEARNING AT JKUAT SCHOOL OF LAW

Modern ICT equipment and methods are employed in learning. The class contact period incorporates the use of power-point presentations, group work presentations, and guest lecturers where arranged in learning. This enhances the interest of students in the various course units. The faculty incorporates other learning methods such as judicial attachment and mooting. These are offered at different points during the course of study at JKUAT.

JKUAT School of Law provides students with a practical learning environment. It has a well furnished moot court with excellent ambience.  All law students have the opportunity to use this facility throughout the course of their study at JKUAT. The moot court is also utilized by members of the moot club and for preparations during the different moot court competitions that the students enroll in. JKUAT Law students have in the recent past participated in international moot court competitions at The Hague as well as in the country.

The JKUAT School of Law offers unique courses in law that distinguishes the graduates, making them very competitive in today’s job market. Such course units include Agricultural Law, Biotechnology and Biosafety Law, Information Communication and Technology Law, Health and Medical Law, Environmental Law, among others. All the core units required for the postgraduate diploma at Kenya School of Law are also offered at the JKUAT School of Law. The JKUAT School of Law lecturers are some of the best in the legal field, very professional, and friendly.

There is wireless internet access at Karen campus and the School of Law building enjoys fast internet speed. The School as well has one computer laboratory with the capability of providing law students with access to electronic resources.  The campus library has a collection of key legal texts, law reports series, journals and other reference material.  Relevant electronic journals can be accessed via the JKUAT e- Library portal.

The JKUAT School of Law adopts an open door policy and encourages students to air their views on their learning experience. Students matters are appropriately attended to and examination results timely released as per the JKUAT Service Charter. Communication to the students is enhanced by cooperating with class representatives who link the faculty members and the students.

Graduates are empowered to critically assess, interpret and apply the law with a historical, comparative and jurisprudential background that is essential for a thorough and critical understanding of law and legal institutions.

The Bachelor of Laws degree curriculum includes a skills component which teaches students generic practical skills such as problem solving, analysis, research and practical legal skills such as legal writing, drafting and argumentation. Law students are required to make constructive use of the knowledge and skills they acquire by contributing to national development and the community through legal aid, community service, street law and similar outreach activities.

Admission Requirements

2.1 To be eligible for admission into the Bachelor of Laws Year 1, a Candidate must satisfy the following academic qualifications:

2.1.1 Be a holder of a Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (K.C.S.E.) (or equivalent certificate) with a mean grade of at least a C+ (C Plus) or equivalent qualification, OR

2.1.2 Be a holder of a Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (K.C.S.E.) (or equivalent certificate) with a mean grade of C (C Plain) or equivalent qualification and a distinction or credit pass in a relevant diploma lasting at least two taught years from an institution recognised by the JKUAT Senate and accredited to offer diploma, OR

2.1.3 Be a holder of a Kenya Advanced Certificate of Education (K.A.C.E) with at least two principal passes (Principal A, B or C) or equivalent qualification as determined by the JKUAT Senate, OR

2.1.4 Be a holder of a degree or degrees from a recognized University, AND

2.1.5 Must have at least grade B (B Plain) in English at Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education or equivalent qualification.

Course Duration

  • The Bachelor of Laws programme lasts for a minimum period of FOUR (4) academic years comprising EIGHT (8) semesters of full-time attendance of lectures offered by the School of Law.
  • To qualify for the award of the Degree of Bachelor of Laws, a candidate is required to complete the course of study for a period of not less than FOUR academic years and not more than SIX academic years.
  • The Bachelor of Laws programme consists of fifty six (56) course units; each course unit being equivalent to 3 credit hours a week.
  • In each academic year, a student takes a total of fourteen (14) course units divided into seven (7) course units per semester.

History

The School of law was established in 2009 upon the inception of the Bachelor of Laws programme in 2008. Since its establishment, the School has had a centralized administrative and management structure, with the Dean being the administrative and academic head, assisted by the School Academic Board. The school has recently established departments to enhance service delivery to our students .The student population at the School has grown from the pioneer intake of 80 to the current number of over 2,000 during the 2015/2016 Academic Year.

The Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology School of Law was established in 2008.  The School is situated at the Karen Campus of the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, which is located in the leafy suburbs of Karen off Bogani Road. The School is located at the ACE Building in a serene environment conducive for learning. It holds a moot court, well furnished classrooms with internet access, computer room for access of e-library materials, lecturers’ offices, an administrative office, a boardroom and a cafeteria.

The mission of the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology School of Law is to offer accessible quality legal education training, research and innovation to prepare graduates with appropriate knowledge, skills and professional competence to provide legal services in all fields, but with particular focus on the fields of Agriculture, Engineering, Technology, Enterprise Development, Built Environment, Health Sciences and other Applied Sciences to suit the needs of a dynamic world, while the vision of the School is to be an institution of global excellence in legal education, training, research and innovation for development.

The first Bachelor of Laws students were admitted into the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology School of Law in 2008 and graduated in 2011.  The school has so far produced more than 500 graduates, some of whom are already flying the JKUAT flag as practicing advocates.

The Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology School of Law comprises a faculty of ten full-time members, most of whom are renowned lawyers with vast experience in the field of law. The School makes use of a wide resource base of part-time lecturers with expertise in varied subject areas of Law.

 The School of Law is located at JKUAT Karen Campus, which is on Pala Close, off Bogani Road.
