Daystar University Law School, Daystar University School of Law has opened admissions into the Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) degree programme following the granting of license by the Council of Legal Education.
The long-awaited approval was confirmed on July 31st through a letter signed by the Secretary/Chief Executive Officer of Council of Legal Education, Dr. J K. Gakeri, after a final onsite inspection of the University’s School of Law programme by the Council on 17th May 2018.
The letter read in part, “The Council is pleased to inform you that Daystar University School of Law has been licensed as a Legal Education provider pursuant to the provisions of the Legal Education Act and the relevant regulations for a period of five years from the date of this letter.
With this licensing, the University has opened admissions for the first batch of students into either full-time (day) or part-time (evening) classes. Applications deadline is 27th August 2018 and classes will start on 3rd September, 2018.
Due to the specialised nature of legal education, the School will only admit 60 students per year. Applicants must have a minimum grade of C+ (Plus) in Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE), or its equivalent and above, and a B (plain) in English or Kiswahili.
The Daystar University School of Law campus is located next to the Daystar Nairobi campus, and is fully resourced for teaching and learning, including a digitized library, computer labs, a moot court and the necessary teaching and support staff.
Besides the academic programme, the School of Law will also operate The Centre for Medical Law and Ethics which is focused on offering support services in research, training and advocacy.
Upon completion, career prospects shall include: Company secretary; State Counsel; Magistrate; Judge; Prosecutor; Parliamentary Counsel; County Legal Officer; Advocate; Legal Officer in private companies, banking sector and parastatals, international organizations, civil societies among others.
Konrad Adenauer Foundation Donates Books to School of Law
The Daystar University School of Law recently received additional reading materials after the German Konrad Adenauer Stiftung Foundation donated 10 books to the Law School Library. At hand to receive the donation was School of Law Dean, Prof. Dr. Dr. Moni Wekesa. The donation comprised five different titles authored by various eminent scholars. These include:
- International Criminal Justice in Africa, 2017
- The Implementation of Modern African Constitutions: Challenges and Prospects
- The African Human Rights Judicial System
- The Legal Profession and the New Constitutional Order in Kenya
- The Constitution of Kenya, 2010
The books are in line with the current curriculum offered by the Daystar University School of Law and thus some have already been adapted to the coursework.
“I am happy that the books came and glad that the students will be on top of things as they use the books for their studies,” said Prof. Dr. Dr. Moni Wekesa.
Prof. Moni added that the donation was a sign of better things to come as his School planned to keep the partnership with the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung Foundation like other top universities in Africa.
The Foundation has only two departments in Nairobi, one that deals with awareness and governance and the other with the rule of law in Africa. The Daystar School of Law aims to train lawyers with both theoretical and hands-on ability. The book donation is a step towards achieving that objective.
