Pwani University Botanical Garden, Pwani University (PU) established a Botanical Garden in late 2011, which was intended to address four major roles: research, educational, conservation and recreation. In part, the educational and research roles embed Indigenous Knowledge (IK) through documentary.
In 2012, the Botanical Garden received a financial support from National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) that was used for various activities such as walkways; enrichment planting, signage installation, species labels, garden seats and waste bins.
The Botanical Garden consist of a basic layout based on some thematic areas (beauty and cosmetic plants, Aloe and succulent plants, wild food plants, medicinal plants, rare and endangered plants, the grasses and timber valued plants. Plant species enrichment started to be more selective, guided by thematic area need and development
The water point, which holds water only seasonally, is intended to be transformed to a water point for all seasons, which will increase biodiversity of the area, including attracting birds and small mammals. The dam site will then receive hydrophytes and other sedentary aquatic zoological (fish, frogs, toads, reptiles etc.) and microbial species, in addition to the migratory birds and mammals. This is in addition to water features, such as fountain, imitations of waterfalls and brooks, which are anticipated to increase the recreational and aesthetic value.
