KMTC CLINICAL MEDICINE

KMTC CLINICAL MEDICINE Started in 1928, the department trains Clinical Officers (CO), a middle level health personnel who offers a wide range of medical services – curative, preventive, promotive and rehabilitative – in all parts of the country.

The Cos supplement the work of medical doctors at all level s of health care – from health centers (where they are in charge) district and provincial hospitals.

Post-basic diploma holders’ services are critical to health service delivery especially in remote rural areas where medical specialists are not available in all health facilities.

Basic entry requirements
Equal opportunities are given to both males and females who must be of good health and aged between 18 to 25 years.

Academic qualifications

  1. O’level KCSE with mean grade C in mandatory subjects, English/ Kiswahili, Biology or Biological sciences. Additional subjects: Physics, Chemistry, General/Home sciences.
  2. Equivalent KCE Div.1 or II with at least six (6) credit passes in English, Biology, Physical Science, Chemistry or Physics.

Courses offered

Basic diploma course
Diploma in clinical medicine and surgery is offered in 15 constituent colleges of KMTC. However, before they are registered with the Clinical Officers Council and start practicing, the graduates have to undergo a one year internship in a government facility.

The course takes three years at the college

Post-basic diploma
Targeted at basic diploma holders who have worked for at least 3 years in the clinical field, the 8 post-basic diploma course s are in various specialties:

Cataract surgery 1 year
Pediatrics 1 year
Lung and skin diseases 1 year
Anesthesia 1 ½ years
Orthopedics 1 year
Reproductive health 1 ½ years

The course duration

1-1 ½ years at KMTC
Save for anesthesia which is offered at Nairobi, Eldoret, Mombasa, Nakuru and Kisumu MTC, all post-basic programmes are offered at Nairobi MTC.
