By | April 18, 2019

Chuka University Igembe Campus, Igembe Campus is a public institution of Chuka University strategically located in the cool and genial environment in Igembe region (Kiegoi and Njoune) in Meru County, Kenya. In line with the Chuka University’s Strategic Plan 2017-2022 and Kenya Vision 2030’s aims of accessing quality and affordable University education to many qualified Kenyans in various parts of our country, Igembe Campus was established in September, 2011.

The Campus was founded on 30th September, 2011 when the then Principal of Chuka University College (now Vice-Chancellor, Chuka University) Prof. E. N. Njoka announced to Igembe Campus stakeholders, that the University Council had approved the establishment of Igembe Campus to give people of Nyambene region and beyond access to high quality and affordable University education. On 19th December 2012, Dr. John M. Kobia was appointed the Founding Director of Chuka University Igembe Campus to coordinate the academic and administrative functions of the Campus.

The idea of establishing a University Campus in Igembe region was conceived and discussed by professionals from the region in September, 2010. This idea was in line with the tenets of the Vision 2030 and the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) that aspire to convert Kenya into a middle-income earning economy and to provide education for all (EFA). This idea was also borne out of the observation that a higher percentage of the population in the region cannot afford to pursue further studies in distant institutions of higher learning. The idea was also justified by the fact the area is endowed with a lot of resources such as income from sale of “miraa” that could be put noble investment such as educating the youth and developing infrastructure to support activities of a University Campus. Through public participation at various levels, the local community donated approximately 70.8 acres of land (35.4 acres in Kiegoi and 35.4 acres in Njoune) and facilities essential for current and future expansion of Igembe Campus.

Igembe Campus is the first public institution of higher learning to be established in Igembe region. The Campus is situated approximately 100 km from Chuka University. The University Campus is located on the slopes of the Nyambene Hills at an attitude of approximately 1800M above sea level. It has a cool climate with temperatures varying from 16oC to 24oC and an average rainfall of about 1,000 mm which offers excellent learning environment. The proximity to Meru National Park, only 20 km from the Campus, makes it an ideal place for anyone interested in learning about wildlife, hospitality and tourism management.

In December 2011 the first group of 21 (twenty one) Master of Education students under the School Based Programme was admitted at Igembe University Campus. Since its inception, Igembe Campus has persistently witnessed remarkable expansion characterized by significant increase in admission of undergraduate (certificate, diploma and bachelors degrees) and postgraduate students in diverse disciplines like Education, Business, Arts and Humanities among others. The current students’ enrollment is over 300. Through aggressive marketing of the Campus, the number of students is projected to increase to over 1,000 in the next two academic years.
