technical university of mombasa marine engineering, Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) has acquired a Sh40 million state-of-the art Marine Engine Simulator to train marine engineers and ship crew. The new multi-million shilling facility installed at the institutions newly built Faculty of Engineering Workshop and Laboratory.
TUM is the only accredited university offering highly specialised marine engineering courses with well-equipped workshops and training facilities.Seafarers Assistance Programme (Sap) Kenya Country co-ordinator, Andrew Mwangura told Job Centre that students keen on pursuing maritime studies should take advantage and enroll at the centre. “This is a laudable effort by TUM to take maritime training to the next level.
My humble plea is to those keen on pursuing maritime engineering studies to enroll at the centre,” he said. Mwangura added that already following the rush for oil and natural gas exploration in the Indian Ocean; there has been urgent need to have personnel in various fields of offshore gas and oil jobs.job market“Jobs in offshore oil and gas rigs require highly skilled technicians and what TUM offers is just right for the job market,’’ Mwangura said.
Acquisition of the Marine Engine Simulator by TUM aims at enhancing its status as a world-class university of engineering, science and technology. This gives it competitive advantage over other institutions offering similar related courses. Students will be able to train through highly interactive sessions as well as monitor real time functions for normal machinery operations as well as simulated faults and emergency scenarios.Modern ships are sophisticated and this type of computer-based training shall provide students with knowledge to manage engine rooms efficiently.
