Mount Kenya University Kampala, Mount Kenya University has opened an office in Kampala, Uganda. Located along Bombo Road, the office will serve as a coordinating centre for students of the Virtual Varsity, an examination centre and an Equip Africa Institute training centre.
Equip Africa Institute is the executive training arm of MKU. Speaking during the official opening of the centre, MKU Board of Trustees Chairman Dr. Simon Gicharu said the move was necessitated by the high demand for quality academic programmes offered by the university.
This is the third country in larger East Africa that MKU has established a footprint, the others being Somaliland and Rwanda. “As you are aware, the East African Common Market Protocol enables free movement of goods and human resource capital across the member countries,” said Dr. Gicharu. “We as MKU are taking advantage of this provision, and at the same time aiding development in East Africa by developing the requisite human resource.”
Dr. Gicharu, who was accompanied by Boniface Murigi, Marketing Director, Henry Musisi, Public Relations Manager-Kigali Campus and MKU Uganda Country Representative Erias Juuko also paid a courtesy call on Prof. Opuda Asibo, the Executive Director of Uganda National Council for Higher Education.
MKU is a member of the Inter University Council of East Africa. Last year, it was admitted to the Association of Commonwealth Universities. The institution is the largest private university in East Africa and has the highest number of accredited Science programmes.
Last October, Gulu University, Uganda, awarded Dr. Gicharu an honorary doctorate of Science for his contribution towards growth of higher education in East Africa.
