Kisii University Health Sciences, Kisii University offers both bachelors and diploma courses in Medical Laboratory Sciences (MELS). Medical Laboratory Science is a course that is housed in the department of Medical laboratory Sciences and school of health sciences. Medical Laboratory Sciences is regulated by Kenya Medical Laboratory Technicians & Technologists Board (KMLTTB) and therefore all students must be indexed by the body. All candidates admitted to Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Sciences in must satisfy the following requirements: obtained a mean grade of C+ at Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) and passed with a minimum of C+ in the following subjects: Biology/Biological sciences, Chemistry, English/Kiswahili, and Mathematics/Physics. All candidates admitted to Diploma in Medical Laboratory Sciences must satisfy the following requirements: obtained a mean grade of Cplain at Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) and passed with a minimum of C plain in the following subjects: Biology/Biological sciences, Chemistry, English/Kiswahili, and Mathematics/Physics.
With the expanding health care programmes and facilities worldwide there continues to be need to increase the number and better qualified Medical laboratory personnel that can provideprofessionals in the true sense of the word and an important member of the team delivering health care and research. To achieve vision 2030 objective for health, there is need for capacity building in the field of Laboratory Medicine which has been compounded by the continued increase of emerging and re-emerging diseases that require well-trained and competent persons to catch up with the modern technological advancement of diagnosis and in research.The programme, therefore, aims to produce persons who have the knowledge and the skills to carry out, develop, and evaluate both general and advanced laboratory test processes in the laboratories.
Students who undertake the training in Kisii University will have the ability to apply and monitor quality laboratory processes and ensure safety in the laboratories. The products will also be professionals at the interface of medical sciences assisting in diagnosing, monitoring, and screening of both communicable and non-communicable diseases. Face to face systems of learning is applied in a semester mode of approach. Lectures, tutorials, group discussion, demonstrations, assignments, laboratory practical, Academic field trips and research projects; methods that encourage learner-centered-active learning methods shall be employed.
A student must take allregistered units for completion of the course. The student shall be required to attend all classes, undertake an industrial attachment, and write a project to qualify for graduation. Each trainee shall be expected to attend at least 80% of the possible attendance in each subject and complete satisfactorily the course work to qualify for the summative exam. Each trainee shall be expected to have passed each subject at 50% as the pass mark to qualify to sit that same subject at summative level. Cumulative assessment shall comprise of continuous assessments, practicals, and end of semester examinations. Assessment methods have been carefully chosen to assess the learning outcomes and combinations of knowledge, skills, and attitudes
