In Kenya, Egerton University is one of the oldest institution of higher learning. Lord Maurice Egerton of Tatton, a British national who settled in Kenya in the 1920s founded this university as a Farm school in 1939. The vision of Egerton University is to be a world class university. The mission of Egerton University is to offer quality education to the society and generate knowledge for global and national development.

In 1936 the name of school was Egerton Farm School and then by 1955 the name had been changed to Edgerton Agricultural College. In agricultural courses, a one year certificate course and a two year diploma courses were offered. By offering diploma programmes the agricultural school was upgraded to an agricultural college. Egerton Agricultural College Ordinance was enacted in 1955. The government of Kenya and the United States agency funded a major expansion of the institution for international development. Egerton University has three campuses. The main campus is located at Njoro, providing different types of programmes; the second campus is Nairobi city campus and the third campus is Kenyatta campus located five kilometres from Njoro campus.
