University Of Eldoret Breaking News, a former University of Eldoret (UoE) Student Governing Council (SGC) President who recently caused a stir on social media after posting a suicide note is recuperating at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH).
Edgar Kisinya Agonya was elected the SGC president in UoE in April this year before he was suspended last month over alleged indiscipline cases. A post by Mounde Walter Samwel, the Secretary General of Kenya University Students Organisation (KUSO) on Facebook implied that Kisinya had killed himself after posting a suicide note on a WhatsApp group.
“Painful… Life injustices will finish our society, dreams killed because of impunity, University of Eldoret Students President commits suicide and left this note behind,” read the post by Mounde. When contacted by The Nairobian about his Facebook post, Mounde said: “I am yet to know more about the incident. I will update you as I get to know more (sic).”
The post that continued to highlight the content of the purported suicide read: “I was born not to condone injustices but to condemn injustices. I didn’t vie for chairmanship to seek popularity… I wanted a university where decisions are not made by management on behalf of students.
“For change to occur, then a price must be paid… it is for this reason that I commit suicide, don’t allow tribalism deny you comradeship. For were it not for your divisions, I would be in school now. SHALOM!!!LETS MEET IN THE NEXT WORLD FOR IT EXISTS… COOOOOMRADEEESSS POWEEEEEER!!!”
However, there was a twist to the events when Eldoret East OCPD Nelson Taliti denied that Kisinya was dead.
“We did not received any report of suicide, but after the rumours, we sought to find out what had transpired. We heard he had been taken to MTRH where a medic told our officers he had passed out after taking alcohol excessively.”
MTRH Chief Executive Officer, Dr Wilson Aruasa, confirmed that Kisinya had attempted to kill himself.
“The patient whom we were told is a student at UoE was booked in this evening and was found to have injected himself with a poisonous drug…” said Aruasa.
He said the student had threatened some university management officials that he would kill himself when he was suspended and had gone ahead to do exactly that.
Cynthia Chebii, the Corporate Affairs and Marketing Officer at UoE refused to comment, saying: “We cannot comment on the Facebook post or his welfare because he was out of school on suspension and was expected to face a senate panel next week to answer to indiscipline charges levelled against him.”
