Welcome to the Faculty of Agriculture, Egerton University (FOA). The deanship is happy you visited our page to explore the training, research and networking treasures. Given FOA’s rich history, the future can only be one of opportunities. Having given birth to more faculties and departments in Egerton University, FOA remains a strong pillar in the existence of Egerton University. The FOA rightly deserves a slot in the members’ only clubs of excellent training, research, networking and extension in the country and region. The FOA is the foundation of agricultural training, research, innovation and business. We are confident that we have the mettle to rub a shoulder with the who is who of the global agricultural training and research. Our history has been critical to our meteoric rise. Every single letter in our growth story forms a strong foundation as well as the architectural blue print of FOA.
We cherish the very first baby step made by Lord Maurice Egerton of Tatton when he started a Farm School in 1939, graduating only one candidate and we are proud of the giant steps we have made to this date when we graduate thousands in the major and minor graduations every year. We have stood the test of time even when enrollment in agricultural training took a nosedive. When students became shy of agriculture in love for other professions in IT and medicine, we didn’t despair but gave them a reason to love agriculture. We actually gave our training a fresh breadth of life, revamped it and gave it a modern face. Currently, the numbers of students enrolling for agriculture-based courses at Egerton University continues to increase every year. We do not take this as a challenge but an opportunity. Our inspiration is drawn from the needs of our nation and common global goals like those described by the millennium development goals (MDGs). That is the reason for our strong partnership and collaborative links, and hence FOA has the most collaborative trainings and research activities.
Our training and research strength boasts of a diversity of expertise and a rich menu of certificate and degree programs. FOA has ensured that all aspects of agricultural training are covered in its 5 Diploma, 10 BSc., 17 MSc., 9 PhDand several tailor made short and executive courses. These programs have drawn trainees from the national, regional and international platform. To remain relevant and in tune with the changing global agricultural scenario, FOA seeks the inputs and ideas of its experts, stakeholders and international experts from reputable institutions.
The FOA has currently embraced the trend of blending agriculture with business. Emphasizing the need to attach value to the whole process of producing an agricultural product is the trending modus operandi. The FOA has therefore embedded value chain analysis and management in its training program for all its BSc. programs. In addition, currently the curricula are being revised to ensure that it is competency based and tailored towards ensuring that the graduate performance certain professional tasks in the job place. The FOA departments are also strategically designed to cater for all sectors of agriculture. Modern training and practices are embraced in Animal Production, Crops, Horticulture and Soils, Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness Management and Dairy and Food Science and Technology.
Our research portfolio speaks volumes of our obsession for solutions towards food security and sustainable resource use. The researchers work very hard and keep themselves abreast with the modern technology in research and extension. We are proud to be the first University to initiate an aggressive Indigenous Chicken breeding program and even went further imported a mega incubator and hatching facility. FOA also embraced modern breeding animal breeding programs that use sexed semen and synchronization of estrus in cattle production. Our crops production and breeding experts are also on the forefront to produce seeds that are both high yielders and adaptable as resistant to vagaries of climate change, pests and diseases. Our presence in exhibitions, conferences and workshops is ubiquitous. We have made our visibility indelible in ASK shows and trade fairs and have won numerous accolades in every event. Our zeal to disseminate our research findings and expertise has made our presence commonplace in journals of international repute and recognition.
We have upped our stakes in matters extension. We are remodeling our extension strategy to take it closer to the farmers. We are experimenting on the first of its kind in this region to have knowledge centers in satellite facilities away from the University. We are proud of our achievements but we have never allowed room for complacency. In the never-ending journey of agricultural training, position one has never been an option for us but a must and we intend to maintain the status quo.
